When Mother Earth -- Felt her wrath -- She punished not only those who hurt her -- But innocents who had yet to live -- Innocents who had yet to learn -- Innocents… -- Children.

Welcome to Biru Peduli Print E-mail
Sunday, 03 December 2006
Biru Peduli is a voluntary, not for profit community. Using Adopt-a-Village concept, Biru Peduli aims to rebuild the spirit, rebuild the village, and rebuild the life.

Adopt-a-village is a simple concept to support earthquake victims in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. We concentrate on a single village at a time in our relief effort. Our main objective is to raise the spirit of the community, to boost motivation, determination and resilience to get back on their own feet progressively. As such, we facilitate processes to put themselves as "an active" subject in the relief program, not just a passive object at the recepient end of the help.

Programs of Biru Peduli (a.k.a Adopt-a-Village):

Lifeline support
Provision of basic needs: food, drinking water, children food, basic medicine, clothing, blanket, cooking oil, kerosene, cooking utensils, and others periodically (once every 3-5 days). Such support was given immediately after earthquake, as part of emergency response.

Shelter creation
With victims' input, we facilitate the building of temporary shelter using tent material, bamboo, corrugated sheet, or any leftover material available on site. We work with the victim to determine the location and size of the shelter required. They will then build the shelter themselves with our help. Putting onus on the victim will facilitate their ownership and self esteem. Temporary shelter was built within the first month of the disaster.

Temporary education facility
Mostly aimed at children, re-activation of education activities will use temporary shelter as classroom. Volunteer teacher will facilitate learning activities to help taking children's mind off the disaster, boost their self esteem, and self confidence, as well as allowing the children to catch up with what was left behind from their school program. Similar to Temporary Shelter above, this program was conducted within the first 2 months of the disaster.

Spirit building activities
Any additional activities which will foster stronger bonding amongst villager, basic entertainment, etc, will be organized by volunteer. Part of the effort in building the spirit is by being there, lending a listening ears and work together with them in rebuilding the village.

Reactivate center of community
Traditionally the life of the community is revolved around village school, mosque, water well, and Balai Dusun (public hall). To facilitate spirit building, we will help them to re-initiate the function of above. The life of the village must start soonest, step by step.

First step is identifying the traditional leaders (mosque’s imam, village chief, etc), and key expertise amongst the villagers (carpenters, teachers, etc). These are key persons who will lead their own community by doing. We are there to facilitate and to support. Next step is to start temporary fixing of water well, village mosque, etc, to be able
to function at basic level, good enough to be used on daily basis. Chatting whilst fetching water, praying together at makeshift mosque, for example, will facilitate interaction amongst victim in positive way. It will give them back their sense of community, which in turn will boost their spirit to start re-building their village and their life.

Construction of Transition House
Once the life in villages are started to come back again, we work together with the villager to build Transition House - a simple house employing earthquake proof bamboo construction. It is aptly named so because it lasts for at least 2 years. Long enough period to transition people to their normal life. Transition House is a proper house, with concrete foundation and floor, and roof tile. It serves not only to protect people from the elements. It also serves to give people hope: by putting them back to live within the privacy of a house.
Transition House's design is the product of Biru Peduli's collaboration with Jogja Archquake Response from Architecture Department, Faculty of Engineering, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Expert volunteer from Architecture Department trains core group of villagers on method of construction. Technically, Transition House's construction must adhere strict procedure and methodology to ensure it's strength and it's earthquake proof properties.

Adopt-a-Student
This is a program to support unfortunate students who are orphaned by earthquake. We provide support for tuition fee (which is paid directly to school) and living allowance.
